Hi everyone! I'm Ruby. I'm 20 years old and a junior at the University of Maryland in College Park. I am majoring in physiology and neurobiology and will attend a master's degree program to become a physician assistant after I graduate. Some of my favorite things are the beach, the river, boating, school, and the summer!
I was born with cystic fibrosis (CF), but I wasn't diagnosed until I was 18 months old. CF is a progressive, genetic disease that causes a buildup of thick, sticky mucus throughout the body. This mucus builds up in the respiratory system and the digestive system. Due to this mucus, I can't digest any food without taking enzymes and I am prone to contracting dangerous lung infections that I typically get once or twice a year. I have to do many things to maintain my health, such as taking 35 pills a day, getting chest x-rays and bloodwork performed annually, and going to doctors appointments at Johns Hopkins every 3 months. I also do about 45 minutes of chest physiotherapy and inhaling medicines daily.
This walk is a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Every cent my team raises will go towards finding a cure! This year, my goal is to raise $5,000. You can help me do this! Another way you can help support me is to walk with me on June 6, 2020, at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Thank you so much for your donations, presence at the walk, and support of my fight against cystic fibrosis.
