Welcome to the Fighting Fibrosis team page! My name is Lauren Kareh, and I hope you consider joining our team or supporting us in any way you are able to!
A little bit about us. I have been doing the walk for CF since as long as I can remember with just a few friends and family, but never created an official team. That changed in 2010 when I joined forces with another CFer I had met in college named Stephanie, to create the team Fighting Fibrosis! We participated in the Cycle for Life as well as the Great Strides events together until July of 2013, when Stephanie had her last breath stolen from her by the disease we shared.
And Stephanie isn’t the only one, nor will she be the last. Cystic Fibrosis will always have a painful and fatal end until there is a cure found. It only affects 70,000 people in the world, with 30,000 of them living in the United States making it too rare of a disease to have proper government funding. So here we are.
Although the life expectancy for those who are born now goes well into the late 30’s and 40’s, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation registry from 2017 states that the average CFer won’t live past their 20’s. A harsh reality for someone who is 28. But there has been amazing progress with new treatments that have improved the quality of life for those with Cystic Fibrosis. And yet it doesn’t seem to be enough to keep this disease at bay! We need a cure before it is too late, and we tell another person with Cystic Fibrosis to rest in peace and breathe easy.
Lets continue moving forward, and keep Fighting Fibrosis for those we lost, those who are still here, and those who aren’t born yet together!
