My Team CF Story
As many of you know I am an avid outdoor enthusiast in a broad range of recreational and competitive activities. Many of these hobbies are merely a vehicle that transports us to a destination where new friendships are forged with those who share the very same passions. I have yet to find an activity that rivals that of off road motorcycle riding when it comes to this cultivation of friendship. Some of the friendliest, most caring and selfless individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting are fellow motorcyclists. Each winter my local club; The HMS Vikings, put on a massive Christmas toy drive for young children and teens. In addition, we begin preparation for the biggest event of the year: The New England Classic Charity Trail Ride. This trail ride takes place over the course of two days (6/13/20 -6/14/20), starting at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. On the surface, it is an organized trail ride that brings together hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts throughout New England. More importantly however, it is the foundation of one of the most effective means of fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis. In the last 39 years, "The Classic" has raised over $2,500,000 for the CF Foundation; paving the way for a lasting and positive impact in the quest for a cure. In the last 7 out of 8 years, The HMS Vikings have been the number 1 fundraiser, setting a record high of $18,500 in the year 2013! With a presence of 40 active club members that equates to an average of over $460 per person!
Last year was my second year participating in The Classic, with the help and generosity of all of my friends and loved ones I raised over $2000! At the time I had a general understanding of Cystic Fibrosis and was proud to be helping a cause even though I did not quite understand how far reaching the detrimental effects of CF can be. Each morning of the event a riders meeting was conducted, part of which included a narrative from some of the bravest kids I have ever met. These children did not just stand up and say "thank-you", they spoke for upwards of 5 to 10 minutes in front of a crowd of over 600 strangers; some of the toughest most hardcore men and women I've ever known, all of whom were brought to tears by the end. My ears perked up and my heart sank as a young man (whom was sponsored by my team the HMS Vikings) remarked that his daily intake of medication totals over 65 pills! The cost alone for these medications to simply keep him alive is overwhelming. Thanks to charitable causes such as this, a miracle drug has been created that has doubled his life expectancy and his quality of life has increased exponentially. One cannot appreciate the gratitude I felt for my health in addition to the heartwarming feeling it gave me to watch this young man befriend the children of fellow riders on my team and play with them throughout the weekend rather than remain on bedrest. Without foundations such as this and the generosity of others this young man's story would certainly have ended long ago.
Those of you who know me best are familiar with my work ethic, drive, competitive spirit and willingness to always extend a hand to those in need. So I ask that you take a moment and consider helping me pay it forward once again by making ANY donation toward this cause. For the price of a cup of coffee we are one step closer to finding a cure to CF. One step closer to changing a child's life for the better!
