My Xtreme Hike Story
Welcome! I hike to end cystic fibrosis and that is what Xtreme Hike 2022 is all about. Thank you for visiting my page. Last year, I hiked through the beautiful Sky Meadow Park in Delaplane, VA, to honor my sister Catherine, brothers Tim and John, and all others affected by this terrible disease. In honor of this cause, I received outstanding support from my family and friends. Together we raised over $4000.00 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CF research. A BIG THANK YOU to all of you! For the third year in a row we led the MAS Mileage team in donations. Let's do it again! Catherine is always with me and still visits in my dreams, always positive and always suggesting something new. Her energy and enthusiasm for life, adventure, and family have always been an inspiration to me and have helped keep me focused. COVID couldn't stop us last year and it certainly won't this year. We cannot stop until there is a cure!
The first picture shows me with Catherine in September of 2015 as we are departing on our regular bike ride to the Honeysuckle Tea House in the country outside of Chapel Hill about 5 miles away. It is not an easy ride, a lot of up and down and extended rises to deal with. She never flagged. Her determination and grit in getting there were impressive. She loved the tea house. It was an oasis from the busyness of life, a quiet, calm, and carefree, outpost where she spent time reading, writing, and watching. Between the house, the various gardens, and the people, there was always something inspiring to behold. The second picture is a visual manifestation of one of Catherine's most brilliant ideas, Cousin Camp. From left to right are: Oscar Stehlin, Lucy Comello, Clara Stehlin, and Elliot Watras sitting in Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati. The camp was a week over the summer for cousins to get together and have a blast, and Catherine was the perfect ringleader! Oscar is now a PFC in the USMC and Clara is exploring her options for college. They both have bright, bright futures. Catherine would be very proud!
This year we return to hike in Massanutten, VA. Catherine will be watching over us all and urging me, eternally, to "Go! Mojo Jojo!". Through the hike we continue to love and honor her and work to help others who still struggle with CF. Please consider making a donation or providing some encouragement in support of our efforts this year.
