Welcome to my page, and thank you for supporting my fifth Xtreme Hike with Evan's Team!
Cystic fibrosis is a rare, life-shortening, genetic disease found in about 30,000 people in the U.S., which causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breath over time. Those living with this disease are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends, and co-workers - all struggling each day just to breathe and live normal, healthy lives.
When my family's friend, Evan, was born in 1997, the average life expectancy for people with CF was 26 years and there were no drugs which directly addressed its underlying cause. Today, the average life expectancy is almost 50 years - and counting, as Vertex's new triple-threat drug has begun helping over 90% of people with CF, including Evan. The fight against CF has come a long way.
But, as one of my fellow hikers said at the 2020 Xtreme Hike, we are more motivated now than ever because - as amazing as all of this progress is - we don't want to leave that 10% behind. While there has been significant progress in treating this disease, there is still no cure and too many lives are cut far too short.
