Welcome to my 13th Massachusetts Xtreme Hike. Last year I cramped at mile 6 so the last 20 were a bit rough. And this is the first year my Mom, Gerry, won’t be helping at the aid stations with feet so it will be extra difficult
This is the Fundraising page to support the people with Cystic Fibrosis, their families & the Foundation. Thanks for considering it. I'd love to recruit a few of you to hike with me as it will be a great motivator to get outside, shake off the winter pounds and help a great group of people.
Otherwise - if you found this page - it means you are considering a donation to this cause. I know many are asked to donate for a lot of great causes, so any contribution - no matter how modest is REALLY appreciated. Drug discovery for CF is continues to tremendous progress and there are number of families that are directly benefiting currently. Their family stories of hope for their loved ones and being able to see a future is amazing progress. AND there is still more work to do in terms of increasing treatments, expanding the pool of those covered, accessibility and affordability.
This is my 13th hike in Massachusetts and 16th time overall (2 in NC, 1 in NY). Each year it gets a bit harder (I'm not quite as young (or fit) as when I started); however, the families and their dedication brings me back and the sense of community is very special. They are a strong and loving group of people dedicated to giving their loved ones a chance and I am grateful that we (me and my family that helps) have the strength and health to assist. Cookie (my dad), Rik (local safety expert) and Terry (CF staff extraordinaire) are have settled on a route at Mt Greylock that should be about 26.5 miles and 5500 feet of vertical ascent and descent.. This is New England so a variety of unpleasant obstacles abound - rocks, MUD, roots, bugs, ticks and the occasional snake. (Hopefully NO bears or skunks).
There are approximately 30,000 people in the United States and 70,000 worldwide living with cystic fibrosis. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends and co-workers who struggle every day just to breathe. I hike for them and thanks for supporting this effort.
