My Xtreme Hike Story

I'm hiking for Little A.

When I worked for the CF Foundation, I understood how and why moms and dads, and CF patients themselves, were working so hard to raise funds to find a cure. Real progress has been made, and there are new breakthroughs and promises of a cure, and people are fighting every day to give CF the boot. Seeing this grit and determination was very inspiring.

And then there were the families who, despite all their efforts, had lost so much. Little kids, teenagers, and young adults still die from CF. It happened all the time during my tenure at the Virginia Chapter. After years and years of dealing with CF and all the heartache that comes with it, I wouldn't have blamed any of these heartbroken families if they stepped back and let someone else carry the burden of a cure for a little while. A cure that would come too late for them.

But I understand it now. Because Little A died.

As unfair, and awful, and unbelievable as it is, Little A died. But her spirit, and her tireless work for a cure, and her genuine compassion and emphathy for her friends fighting the same battle make us want to work even harder for a cure. Even though she can't fight with us anymore. It's one way I can honor her incredible strength and her desire for a cure.
