Our Hike Story

Faylen MacKenna was born May 2017.  She was born 6 weeks early with a perforated bowel caused by Cystic Fibrosis.  For the first 18 months of her life she was in and out of the hospital until the call came.  Everything was dropped.  Mom and dad headed to Georgetown University Hospital for Triple organ transplant.  She received a new pancreas, liver and intestines.  She lived in Northern VA for close to a year before she was able to come back to Richmond.  

Since the transplant Faylen has been able to live a more independent life.  Going to school.  Playing outside freely and learning to swim.  Her favorite thing to do is spend time with her cousins.  No mask is required and she can have unlimited fun.  

Everyday we watch Faylen grow and are amazed how a 7 year old can endure everything she has gone through.  Medications daily, and nutrition through a G tube to keep her weight up.  She has received the best care from a wonderful medical team and parents who won’t give up.  

Faylen can’t spend the night at a friend’s house.  Indoor playgrounds or trampoline places are off limits.  Restaurants are limited based on sanitation and how close tables are.  She is unable to go to public places without a mask.  Mainstream America lived this life for a year due to a pandemic.  Faylen will be living this way her whole life unless a cure can be found.
