My grandson Colby is a happy 11 year old boy living every day with Cystic Fibrosis.
CF is a genetic disease with no cure. We have come to the realization there will never be a cure for Colby and others with CF. However with research and various medications in the pipeline someday our hopes are he will be able to have a long healthy life. Currently the average life expectancy is 37 years of age.
Everyday his morning begins with medications delivered through a nebulizer to help thin the mucus, followed by 30 minutes of a vest that shakes him to help break up the mucus and prevent dangerous infections. When Colby is healthy he does this first thing in the morning and then again before bedtime. When Colby is sick these treatments are increased to 4 times a day. This also affects his digestive system his body doesn’t absorb any vitamins or nutrients. To help with this he takes enzymes prior to eating to help with absorption.
