There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis and I am one of them. Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families. For those of you who are unfamiliar with CF, it is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. I was diagnosed with CF at birth after being born with an intestional blockage. Cystic Fibrosis requires daily breathing treatments and medications to try to maintian lung function and prevent infection. I also take enzymes with food to digest fat. In my lifetime (I am 27), the life expectancy for CF patients has increased nearly twenty years to the age of 40. This has been possible due to scientific advances from research funded by donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This year I have been lucky enough to receive the brand new CF drug Trikafta. This drug has changed my life. My lung function is more stable and I am able to fight off sickness. This drug took years to develop and it was thanks to the CF foundation that the research and funding for this was available. We need these medications to be made for every gene type for CF and to do that we need your help. People with CF are still dying way too young before a medication is developed for their gene type or a cure is found. This drug is the first step to extending the life expectancy for CF but it still requires daily treatments and a fight for the ability to breathe.
Real progress has been for those who have CF, but there is still no cure for this devastating disease and many lives are cut far too short. By walking today, I am helping add tomorrows to the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis. Will you join me? Please consider making a donation to my Great Strides fundraising campaign today!
