There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis. CF is a genetic disease, in which the patient received one gene from each carrier parent. They struggle every day just to breathe. I walk for them and hope you will support me in my efforts.
Real progress has been made in the search for a cure, but the lives of people with CF are still cut far too short. There still is no cure for this devastating disease. In fact, one of our dear friends in Tucson,Arizona lost their beautiful daughter Jolene to CF at just age 10. They did everything 'right' for their daughter -- all the daily medications, all the treatments, all the hospital stays... and CF still stole perfect Jolene far too young. Their family still fights CF every day for their remaining daughter, Ceci, who also has CF.
Chris was diagnosed with CF at birth in 1977. He has endured countless surgeries and very long hospitalizations (on average 3-4 per year for 2-3 weeks at a time) just to keep his original lungs functioning. He was not really expected to live past high school, or certainly not particularly far into his 20s. He married his wife, Elizabeth, in 1999 and they have 2 healthy non-CF children (ages 10 and 7). We have entered a new phase of CF by receiving a life-saving double lung transplant in Jan. 2015. It has allowed Chris to no longer need supplemental oxygen tanks and tubing everywhere we go, to play with our kids more freely, to travel again, to not be constantly in need of hospital rooms for weeks on end, and in his words, "feel human again". And it has allowed him to reach a milestone that he really never thought possible: celebrating his 40th birthday!! But transplant is never a CURE for CF... double lung transplants only have an average of 5 year survival rate due to rejection, infection and other complications that come with transplant. CF continues to need research and development.
Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families.
