We write this letter today from a place we are all to familiar with, the hospital. Our son, Thomas Gamache, has Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects many systems throughout the body, but mainly his respiratory and digestive systems.
Thomas at age 19 has spent more time in the hospital than most of us ever care to imagine, with 7-14 days stays 3-4 times every year. He doesn’t let the disease define him. He has a job he loves at a major parts dealership and a passion for many hobbies like R/C cars, motocross and downhill skiing. He enjoys spending time with his friends and family while doing the things he loves.
Every year we get ready for an event called Great Strides, a walk that’s held annually to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. We have been blessed repeatedly over the past 17 years to have overwhelming support from everyone and we thank you from the bottom of our heats.
Team Tommy G will be walking on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Mayor’s Water Front Park. Registration is at 10:00 am with the walk starting at 11:00 am. Our team works very hard each year to be one of the top contributors at this walk and we would love to have your support by either having you donate or come out and Join in on the fun. Thomas loves having everyone get together and celebrate the achievements that are made. We would be happy to share with you how to obtain sponsors for the walk. To donate, feel free to go to Patti’s CF Page or Aaron’s CF Page to make an online donation and/or join Team Tommy G. or send a check payable to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-to Team Tommy G, 10460 Pioneer St., Marcellus, MI 49067.
Your donation is 100% tax deductible and you should know that nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised funds research and programs to cure Cystic Fibrosis. Thomas has been personally benefitting from one drug called Symdeko a dual therapy drug to help treat the underlying cause of the disease and there is a triple therapy drug to be released in 2019 that should help increase his lung function by an additional 10%!
Thank you everyone for considering helping us in this important cause. We are continually blessed.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, indoor events sponsored by the CF Foundation are strictly prohibited at this time. Scheduled outdoor events must adhere to strict requirements to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection. Events may be subject to change at any time based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON ATTENDANCE AT OUTDOOR FOUNDATION EVENTS:
To minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection, attendees at CF Foundation events must adhere to the following requirements:
Practice physical distancing and maintain at least a safe 6-foot distance from persons outside of their household at all times
Face masks strongly encouraged and expected to be worn in accordance with local guidelines. (Note, children under two years of age should not wear masks due to safety concerns and therefore should not attend CF Foundation events where there is risk of interacting with someone outside of their household.)
Follow basic infection, prevention and control practices by regularly washing hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow.
Persons with CF should consult their physician before participation in any in-person event as they may be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. People with CF should maintain a safe 6-foot distance from persons outside of their household at all times.
