Hello my name is Kohen Hildreth, and I am a 2 year old boy who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. My mom found out when I was just 10 days old. First diagnosed by my newborn screen, and confirmed by a sweat test. My daily treatments as of right now are 25-35 Enzyme pills a day (5-8 with every meal), A liquid acid reducer 3ML a day, a multivitamin, extra vitamin D drops , albuterol 2-4x daily inhaled through my nubilizer, a pulmozyme inhaled through my nebulizer once a day, sodium chloride inhaled through my nebulizer once a day, and my vest 2-4x daily which breaks up the sticky mucus in my lungs so its easier for me to cough up. I have to take the enzymes before every meal/feeding to properly absorb the nutrients from my food. The vest, albuterol, sodium chloride and pulmozyme are all part of my airway clearance to keep my lungs working properly. I start my treatment medication this month, called orkambi. I'm so excited to start this medicine in hopes it can add some years to my life. With Cystic Fibrosis being a progressive disease as time goes on, my treatments and medicines will increase. My journey living with cystic fibrosis has just began, and I need your help along the way!
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.
In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage, and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients. Cf also causes reproductive issues, 99% of men with CF are born sterile.
There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends, and co-workers who struggle every day just to breathe. I walk for them and hope you will support me in my efforts. Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families!
Real progress has been for those who have CF, but there is still no cure for this devastating disease and many lives are cut far too short. By walking today, I am helping add tomorrows to the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis. Will you join me? Please consider making a donation to my Great Strides fundraising campaign today!
