What is Cystic fibrosis (CF)? It is a genetic disease that affects 30,000 people in the United States each year. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas from allowing proper food absorption. The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF is in the early 40s.
Why this fundraiser? Great Strides is CFF’s largest and most successful National fundraising event. Nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised goes straight to research! Research and care funded by the CF Foundation are making a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. There are new and improved drug therapies available that target the underlying cause of this disease. Others are in the pipeline but we need to keep the research going so we do not continue to lose precious lives to CF each day. That's why your help is needed now more than ever to ensure that a cure is found. How does this help Lauren? Lauren was diagnosed with CF at 5 months of age. Lauren enjoys dancing, loves Disney, traveling and spending time with family and friends. In addition to taking 30+ pills daily, she has known nothing less than 3 + hours of daily chest physiotherapy and mix of inhalers on well days. Illness brings an added host of medications and therapies. Improved medications and therapies aids Lauren and other CF patients at a chance to successfully fight CF. This year, as last, Lauren continues to fight two major bacterial infections along with CF itselft, but as you can see from her smile, her love for life is undeniably her strength that keeps her going. This past year, Lauren was blessed to get her hands on what we call "the miracle drug" because of all your help in donations. Trikafta was FDA approved and has made our family hopeful there is a cure on the horizon.
How can YOU help Lauren? This year, we are walking in the Great Strides walk at Bill Fredrick Park in Orlando on Saturday October 3rd. Please help us meet our fundraising goal of $3,000.00 by sponsoring us. Making a tax deductible donation is easy. Choose one of the two methods:

Foundation-Sponsored Indoor and Outdoor Events and Gatherings
The Foundation is closely following the evolving coronavirus outbreak. We will continue to monitor coronavirus guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and assess whether we need to change any scheduled events.
To reduce the risk of getting and spreading germs at CF Foundation-sponsored events, we ask that everyone follow basic best practices by regularly cleaning your hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow, and maintaining a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection. Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function.
To further help reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation's attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to attend the indoor portion of a Foundation-sponsored event at a specific time. For the outdoor portion, the Foundation recommends that all people with CF maintain a safe 6-foot distance from each other at all times.
