Dear Family & Friends, April 2020 It's that time of year again to support our continued efforts to find a cure for Karen and so many others affected by Cystic Fibrosis. The progress in the research is very exciting and new drugs are now available to help in treatment of CF and they are that much closer to a cure. This past year a new "miracle" drug was released for CF people called TRIKAFTA, and finally this one Karen actually has the right mutations to be able to benefit from it. Approximately 90% of all CF people can take this drug. She started taking TRIKAFTA February 2, 2020 and her baseline always there cough was practically gone at the 10 day mark. On March 3 she had her first follow up tests and her lung function improved from 105% FEV1 (amount of air you can force from your lungs in 1 second) to119% FEV1! Her FEF25/75 (small airways) from 103% to 162%! This is incredible and that was just after one month on Trikafta. Unfortunately, with COVID popping into our lives the end of March, Karen's 3 month follow up to see how the medicine is working was at home through TeleMed, so no lung function tests to report further improvement, but we are excited and know that there is further improvement, which will be shown once she can be seen in clinic again. There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends and co-workers who struggle every day just to breathe. We walk for them and hope you will support us in our efforts. Real progress has been made in the search for a cure, but the lives of people with CF are still cut far too short. There still is no cure for this devastating disease. By "VIRTUAL" walking May 9, 2020, I am helping add tomorrows to the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis. Will you join me? Support me by making a donation to my Great Strides fundraising campaign today! Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families.
