Have you ever just wondered why? I wonder why every day. Why were we fortunate enough to find out that Cole had CF before he was born? Why we were connected with such an amazing medical team? Why was his surgeon was one of the best doctors I have ever come across? Why did God give us a child who is one of the most resilient, forgiving, and joyous children I've ever met?
However, what I question the most is why we were lucky enough to be blessed with such an amazing support system. Very few people understand the extreme emotions and challenges that come with CF. It is hard not to feel isolated. We knew 6 months prior to Cole having his feeding tube placed that he had reached a very critical place with his health. I knew we were going to have to make one of the most difficult decision that we had been faced with in the last 13 years. I prayed every day that we would make the right decision, that Cole would forgive us for the decision I knew we had to make, and that when we were ready to tell people, that they would step up and offer support.
Now I question why I prayed for that last thing. Our friends and family have always superseded our expectations when it comes to love and support and this time was no different. I am still in awe when I think about how people helped our family get through that life changing event. The truth is that we couldn't have done it without you. It has only been 3 months since his surgery and Cole has already gained over 7lbs, his lung function is slowly increasing, and he has adjusted to the changed better than we could have ever expected.
Year after year I write the Great Strides letter in an attempted to raise money for CF research and every year I am still shocked by the overwhelming response from all of you. In the last 12 year we have raised over $64,000 with your help. 99% of these funds have gone towards CF research. Every medication and medical treatment that Cole does was funded by your donations. CF research does not receive government funding and 90% of the funds that support CF research come from family and friends of those with CF. You have helped Cole reach the age of 13. You have kept him healthy enough to go to school and run cross country this year. You have given him the opportunity to live into adulthood. Please don't ever question whether your donation, no matter what amount, made a difference because I can tell you with 100% confidence that it has.
Please consider making a donation this year. Don't think that your donation has to be big to make a difference. Skip that Starbucks coffee for a day, don't buy that energy drink, eat one less meal out, and instead donate that amount. Help Cole and others like him take one more breath. We would also love to have you join us on the day of the walk.
