I+iconUSA will has agreed to sponsor a team for the 2019 Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and I will be our Team Captain. We are looking for a few good men and women to join in this adventure! This year’s walk will be held on June 1, 2019 at Heinz Field. There is also a walk on the same day at the Navy Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The event is very family oriented with a lot of fun for young and old (walking is optional). We have also formed a subset “Construct the Cure” and will be competing with other local construction companies to see who can raise the most money. It's all about the team work, together, we can make a difference! Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects around 30,000 people and their families. No other genetic disease causes more deaths in young people than CF. 30 years ago the average life expectancy of a person with CF was 19 years old. A person born with CF today has an average life expectancy of 41 years old! This dramatic increase could not have been achieved without the support of the CF Foundation. Simply put, 30,000 people is a very small market for large pharmaceutical companies to invest research dollars into. That is where the CF Foundation plays such a significant role to fund research and drug development. The CF Foundation is also one of the highest rated charities with almost $.90 of each $1.00 donated going directly towards research and programs. At least three i+iconUSA employees have family members affected by CF. My daughter, Nicole (Mike Jr.’s sister), Roberta Madoni’s grandson, Giovanni, and Katie Spear’s niece, Sarah all have CF. And there are probably others too. Treatments have come a long way, but there is still more research that needs to happen in order to find a cure. About the Walk For more than 30 years, Great Strides – the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event – has supported the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and raise awareness for this rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that makes it difficult to breathe and shortens lives. Great Strides provides a fantastic opportunity for family, friends, students, and colleagues to come together and make a difference in the lives of people with CF. The event harnesses the power of people with a shared vision and encourages collaboration, team building, and leadership, as we collectively take steps to find a cure. Registration is free, but walkers are encouraged to raise funds. Your support will help accelerate innovative research and drug development, as well as advance care and advocacy. Nearly every CF drug was made possible by the Foundation and because of funds raised from Great Strides, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives and pursuing their dreams.
Foundation-Sponsored Indoor and Outdoor Events and Gatherings
The Foundation is closely following the evolving coronavirus outbreak. We will continue to monitor coronavirus guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and assess whether we need to change any scheduled events.
To reduce the risk of getting and spreading germs at CF Foundation-sponsored events, we ask that everyone follow basic best practices by regularly cleaning your hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow, and maintaining a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection. Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function.
To further help reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation's attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to attend the indoor portion of a Foundation-sponsored event at a specific time. For the outdoor portion, the Foundation recommends that all people with CF maintain a safe 6-foot distance from each other at all times.
