This is my eighth year as leader for Team Reis. As many of you know, Reis is my granddaughter. She is a happy, energetic person with boundless enthusiasm. She remains strong and healthy, thanks to her "magic medicine", her team of doctors and family and her own drive. Over the past years we were based in the Bay Area in California, and this is the first year that Reis is very excited to be able to walk and fundraise with us up here in Seattle.
At birth, Reis underwent surgery and remained in intensive care for two and a half months. However, Reis was one of the lucky ones in that she was able to start on Kalydeco at age 2 years and recently switched to Trikafta. Because she was able to start so young, she has been spared many of the devastating effects of Cystic Fibrosis. She still takes medications three times a day and does chest PT twice daily, but is able to otherwise able to participate as any other active 8 year old. Recently, Reis received a Young Heroes award after being nominated by her CF doctor and will be honored in a special ceremony in May.
The medications that help Reis were developed after many years of research, mostly funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. As a physician, I am still in awe because these medications act at cell level to correct defects throughout the body. Although these medications are amazing, they do not work for all people with CF, and they are not a cure. This is still a dream for the future, especially as the field of gene therapy expands. The research is incredibly expensive and is ongoing. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is continuing to raise funds for this.
I am hopeful that the cure may come in my lifetime. Please consider making a donation to the CF foundation to help continue this research. This is the only cause that I fundraise for every year, as it is very dear to my heart.
Will you join me and support my fundraising goal?
