Walk with us!
One of my closest friends since childhood has a son who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). As a fellow lover of the beaches in southern Orange County, they call him the Cowabunga Champ. Regular visits to the beach with his mom to breathe in the fresh ocean air has been a blessing and huge part of his daily routine. I walk for him, his loving family, and all others who live their best life despite the challenges in front of them from CF. Will you join me and support my Great Strides fundraising goal?
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
If you don't know much about CF, Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic disease, that has robbed people of tomorrows – progressively limiting their ability to breathe and tragically shortening life. There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with CF. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends, and co-workers who struggle every day in the face of this devasting disease
In people with CF, mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene cause the CFTR protein to become dysfunctional. When the protein is not working correctly, it’s unable to help move chloride -- a component of salt -- to the cell surface. Without the chloride to attract water to the cell surface, the mucus in various organs becomes thick and sticky.
In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps germs, like bacteria, leading to infections, inflammation, respiratory failure, and other complications. For this reason, minimizing contact with germs is a top concern for people with CF.
In the pancreas, the buildup of mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that help the body absorb food and key nutrients, resulting in malnutrition and poor growth. In the liver, the thick mucus can block the bile duct, causing liver disease. In men, CF can affect their ability to have children.
What will your donation go to?
Real progress has been made for those who have CF, but there is still no cure for this devastating disease and many lives are cut far too short. By "walking" with me in Great Strides, you can help accelerate the Foundation’s pursuit of new therapies and provide vital support to meet the needs of the CF community.
Please support the Cowabunga Champ!
Your participation will help us get one step closer to ending this terrible disease. Let’s make CF stand for Cure Found.
