To my family and friends,
11 years ago we lost our beloved Lynnea Brooks, who had been battling Cystic Fibrosis her entire life. She was my best friend since the age 5. She was beautiful, smart, witty and had this magnetic presence. She was gone way too soon. I will continue this fight so that nobody ever has to lose a friend, daughther, son, grandchild, family member to this awful disease
For the past 16 years I have been walking in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides Event. For the past 10 years I have had my own chapter in our hometown, Palm Springs. Due to Covid,we were not able to hold our annual walk last year. This year we can gather and come together to raise awareness and money in hopes to battle this disease.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. Those living with cystic fibrosis struggle each day just to breathe.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
Real progress has been made in the search for a cure, but the lives of people with CF are still cut far too short. There still is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis. By walking today, I am helping add tomorrows to the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis.
