Friends – in April 2017, my nephew, Coleman Principe, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects the lungs, the pancreas, and other organs. Coleman is a sweet, three-year old boy who almost always has a smile on his face, and his parents – my sister, Julia Principe, and my brother-in-law, Ryan Principe – are the best parents he could ask for. Two-and-a-half years ago, Julia and Ryan created team Coleman for the Cure to support the efforts of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) through its Great Strides Columbia 5K-walk, and thanks to the generosity of so many friends and family--and to the hard work of Julia, Ryan, and my late mother--Coleman's team has raised more than $100,000 in the past two-and-a-half years, which is more than any other family in the state of South Carolina! This year, we are hoping to build on the past two years of success. The research and treatments being funded by CFF continue to improve the length and quality of lives for those living with CF, and almost all the medications that Coleman takes have been deveoped because of the CFF.
To support Coleman and the approximately 30,000 other Americans living with CF, I have once again joined team Coleman for the Cure. We are not able to have the in-person 5k this year due to the pandemic, but Team Coleman for the Cure has a great back-up plan. Specifically, we are doing a "virtual" 5k where participants--while wearing the awesome new Coleman for the Cure t-shirts--walk, run, or bike 3.1 miles (5k) on Saturday, September 19 and share your photos of yourself (and your families) wearing your t-shirt. Or, if you're not the social media type, you can send your pictures to me, and I will share them. By participating, you will help raise awareness of the CFF an dsupport Coleman and all others living with CF.
