In April 2017, when Coleman was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis two weeks after his birth, it wasn’t clear what his childhood would be like. But now, four years later, Coleman thrives at preschool, plays soccer and does karate, and is happiest running around with his friends. And at our last clinic visit in April 2021, the doctors said Coleman was doing "outstanding”!
A big reason Coleman is doing so well is because of advancements in treatment for CF funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Each and every day, Coleman takes around twenty pills and completes an hour of breathing treatments, and that is only part of his routine. And we were thrilled to learn that Coleman is a candidate for a trial through our clinic at UNC for a drug called Trikafta, which has caused significant improvement in lung function and BMI scores, and which is allowing people with CF to lead much fuller lives. Depending on the number of trial slots at our clinic, it’s possible Coleman could begin the trial this summer!
To support the CF Foundation, my family participates in Great Strides, which is a national 5K walk/run that raises awareness and funds for the Foundation. Over the last three years, we have been overwhelmed by the support from our family and friends. In 2018, 2019, and 2020, Coleman for the Cure was recognized as the top family team in South Carolina, with over 100 walkers and over $30,000 raised each year. In only three years, Coleman for the Cure has raised over $120,000! Please know that your support has a real impact on the lives of Coleman and thousands of others living with CF.
Even though we’re not having an in-person walk this year due to COVID-19, we will walk virtually on May 15 to raise awareness and celebrate the success of our team. We hope you will join us! You can click DONATE TO A TEAM MEMBER to make a one time donation or JOIN THIS TEAM to participate in the virtual walk with us and/or donate and fundraise for Coleman for the Cure.
Please share our page with family and friends who may be interested in donating or participating. And THANK YOU for your support! We are forever grateful to each of you!
