In January 2009, our two- month old daughter, Tina, was officially diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Tina is a sweet, spunky, amazing, and brave 10 year old who fights everyday just to live and breathe.
CF is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. No cure exists. However, scientists have made significant progress in the search for a cure, especially in recent years, and we have real reason to hope that, with enough funding, these scientists will develop drugs that eliminate or drastically reduce the symptoms for most or all those with CF in the coming years.
The research and drugs being developed through the backing of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation are Tina's best chance for a normal and long life. For 30 years, Great Strides – the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event – has supported the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis. Tina's team – TEAM UNICORN -- will not only be walking for Tina, but for all those with CF.
Great Strides Columbia, a family-friendly 5K-walk, will be held May 4th at Doko Meadows Park in Blythewood, SC. This fun event raises awareness for people with CF and their families and funds for research. Registration is free, but walkers are encouraged to donate and ask others for support. Your gift is 100-percent tax deductible.
Did you know that the Cystic Fibrosis foundation has no federal funding, ZERO, unlike so many other diseases and medical conditions. In fact, the only reason Tina has these experimental drugs to try put is because of personal donations made through people like you. So without these donations she would have no other options!! 90 cents out of every single dollar goes towards research and funding for new treatments and meds. Can't say that for hardly any other charities!! If every one of my friends donated $1, just $1, we could raise $200 just like that. Please help bring more tomorrows for Tina and others with CF.
We hope you will consider joining our team or making a donation. To register just click "join our team".
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, indoor events sponsored by the CF Foundation are strictly prohibited at this time. Scheduled outdoor events must adhere to strict requirements to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection. Events may be subject to change at any time based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON ATTENDANCE AT OUTDOOR FOUNDATION EVENTS:
To minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection, attendees at CF Foundation events must adhere to the following requirements:
Practice physical distancing and maintain at least a safe 6-foot distance from persons outside of their household at all times
Face masks strongly encouraged and expected to be worn in accordance with local guidelines. (Note, children under two years of age should not wear masks due to safety concerns and therefore should not attend CF Foundation events where there is risk of interacting with someone outside of their household.)
Follow basic infection, prevention and control practices by regularly washing hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow.
Persons with CF should consult their physician before participation in any in-person event as they may be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. People with CF should maintain a safe 6-foot distance from persons outside of their household at all times.
