My Great Strides Story
Nearly 40,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis: a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and friends who face the sobering prospect of a shortened lifespan. I walk for them.
My sister was one of those affected by this genetic and terminal disease. We lost her on October 30, 2012, the day before her favorite holiday and only 23 years into her life. Corie lived every day as if it could be her last because it could have always been true. She packed more living into her 23 short years than most people do in a full, long lifetime. She was also a champion for cystic fibrosis awareness. She was open about her disease and spoke at a Great Strides event. It's because of her attitude regarding her disease that I want to bring awareness to the thing that robbed her family and friends of more time with her.
Working alongside the CF community, the CF Foundation has fostered the development of more than a dozen CF treatments and helped add decades of life for people with CF. Yet, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. Our vision is a cure for every person with cystic fibrosis – a life free from the burden of this disease – and we will not leave anyone behind.
