I cannot believe that it is already Great Strides time again! The annual Cleveland Great Strides Walk at the Cleveland Zoo is always a highlight of our year and is a great benchmark for Mylee and for our family. This year we have so much to celebrate! Mylee started on a groundbreaking new medication called Trikafta in late November and it dramatically altered the course of Mylee's fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Within 24 hours, her cough sounded dramatically different and within 3 days she practically stopped coughing at all. It was such an amazing transformation. Mylee was able to walk up stairs without getting winded. She felt much better and her appetitie increased as well!
We are so thankful for this new medication! However.... we know that even better therapies are right around the corner and that a cure is coming! We just know it! As our good friend Katie Maric says, "I think it will be one of our dollars that helps find a cure." Every dollar raised gets us closer. The CF Foundation just committed 500 MILLION dollars to expand their research over the next 5 years. Half a BILLION dollars! That is so encouraging! Your donations and you walking with us and helping us raise money is making a huge difference! When Mylee was diagnosed with CF 18 years ago, the life expectancy was just 21 years. Today the life expectancy has more than doubled that and for the first time EVER, there are more adults with Cystic Fibrosis than children. That's simply amazing! For so long, this was considered a childhood disease, because most people with CF didn't make it to adulthood. The face of this disease is changing! But... we can't stop until we have a cure!
For Mylee's 18th birthday, she got a tattoo that is really awesome! It is an artistic rendering of the fact that mylee has 2 copies of the Delta F508 gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis (there are many different genetic combinations that can cause CF, but Mylee's is the most common). She had the F designed with a tail that comes back around to make the letter C, so it looks like the letters CF are there. Mylee said that represents Cystic Fibrosis right now, but she can't wait for the day that her tattoo stands for CURE FOUND!
With Mylee turning 18 this year, so many things are changing. High school graduation is just a few weeks after the CF walk and she is planning on going to the University of Toledo along with her twin brother Malachi this fall. So crazy. Along with those and many other changes, we have made Mylee the primary fundraiser for her team. www.myleefruits.com goes straight to her fundraising page. She and I are having a competition this year to see who can raise the most money as I have been the primary fundraiser from our family. So... if you would like to donate to Mylee's page, visit www.myleefruits.com and if you would like to help me beat her, you can donate to my page (which still goes to Mylee's walk TEAM total), you can go to www.jamesfruits.com . Last year we raised over $12,000 and that is our team goal again! Help us blow that goal away and add more tomorrows for everyone with Cystic Fibrosis!!!
Thank you for helping us be #FruitsStrong and for helping remind I Breathe For CF.WarriorPrincess // @CF.WarriorPrincess that people are fighting for her just like they are fighting for her mother!
Much love from the Fruits5!
