Dear Family and Friends,

We fall; we get up; and we celebrate our triumphs. Participating in this year’s Cycle for Life event represents overcoming great odds and the beginning of a new chapter of our lives. I, personally, will be riding for the first time in celebration of so many things. Beginning with surviving my own battle with cancer, which took a patient team of medical staff and family members, who cared for me 24/7.

Lisa and I became grandparents in January. Our second daughter, Shira, gave birth to Amri, a sweet, smiley, babbling baby girl who is growing up oh so fast. I’m cherishing being able to go work each day to investigate environmental health problems facing Californians. Rebekah, our oldest child, is carrying on my legacy at the Newborn Screening Program to identify and give those with CF an early start with the best treatments possible to keep them healthy. I’m delighted watching our eldest son, Jeremy, who has CF, successfully tackle two recent knee surgeries from playing professional Ultimate Frisbee, as well as taming the CF beast inside him to live a fulfilling life. I’m welcoming our other son, Evan, back to the Bay Area from Hawaii to continue his careers in hospitality and dance for our viewing pleasure. Bethany, our youngest child, is doing great work in college and in the CF and broader community exemplified by her recent success in getting, for a second time, the Vertex Pharmaceuticals All In For CF collegiate scholarship.

I taught each of my five kids to ride a bike and experience the independence and adventure that it brings. They fell, they got up and were triumphant. In re-teaching me how to walk, swim and cycle, they returned to me the lessons of resilience and perseverance. As I embark on this recovery ride I am hopeful for what lies ahead for my son Jeremy because of the pioneering research CFF funds. I ask for your support for the CFF Cycle for Life bicycle ride this year in Sonoma County on June 15. Join us if you can, since together we’re stronger and closer to bringing the CF cure to all. Sign up or donate to the CF Foundation through Jeremy West, our Cycle for Life team. To make a donation please send a check written out to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or donate online at: http://cffh.convio.net/goto/JeremyWestMK

With much gratitude,
