My CF Cycle for Life Story

 

Nearly 40,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis: a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and friends who face the sobering prospect of a shortened lifespan. I cycle for them.

My had a cousin. Her name as Heather. Heather was born with CF. She spent her life fighting CF. When I was dating my future wife, I heard a lot about Heather, because she was always in the hospital, and families talk about their loved ones a lot when they are suffering. And Heather was suffering. She was fighting to breath, as her lungs filled. She would eventually be released, but it seemed that it was only a matter of weeks before she was back in. 

Eventually Heather received a lung transplant. But in the end, she died. Way too young. 

Working alongside the CF community, the CF Foundation has fostered the development of more than a dozen CF treatments and helped add decades of life for people with CF. Yet, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. Our vision is a cure for every person with cystic fibrosis – a life free from the burden of this disease – and we will not leave anyone behind.
