David Bennett, Mark Wagner and I started Team Richard in 2011 to honor the memory of our friend and Bancroft School classmate Richard Bjork. Richard was one of those people whom everybody just instinctively liked. He was cheerful and outgoing, and he had a terrible prognosis for a very short life. At the time we were in school together, most CF patients did not live past their teens. Richard defied the odds: he graduated high school, went to Bates College (where he earned a chemistry degree), and, with the help of a double lung transplant, went on to become a chef, restauranteur, husband, and father to two little girls.
Since that initial event in Massachusetts in 2011, Team Richard has expanded to include many more members from around the country who participate in a variety of fundraising activities to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. For 2020, I am proud to announce the creation of a new Northern New England Chapter of Team Richard, which will concentrate on the Cycle for Life in July on the beautiful coast of Maine, where I have made my home since 2000.
This is a cause in which I believe. Team Richard has raised over $40,000 over the years, and we have also seen real advances made in the fight against CF. Richard lived into his 40s, which would have been unheard of at the time of his diagnosis. Now the mean survival age is 41.
