My CF Climb Story

  • This is me: Brett Kruger - *NOTE: All photos/content represent my personal views and opinions and not that of the Fire District, its union members, or affiliates
  • Jake's Famous Smile 10/10/1994 - 10/16/2014 "Carry On"

Known as "Big Pink," the US Bancorp Tower in Portland, OR consists of 40 flights totaling 800 stairs. Climbing it while wearing nearly 80 lbs of structural firefighting equipment and breathing from a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is no small feat. Then again, neither is battling Cancer...

Jacob Raymond Stoneking - AKA "Jake," was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting, fishing, and riding his ATV. His smile was contagious. His positive attitude and energetic spirit effortlessly lit up the room.

At the age of 14, prior to the start of his Freshman year of High School, Jake was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of Brain Cancer. While others were in class and out on the athletic field, Jake was receiving specialty treatment from Doernbecher's Children's Hospital at OHSU. Jake's strong will, determination, and never give up attitude allowed him to overcome the many obstacles associated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. After a relentless year of rollercoaster high's and low's, Jake was in the clear.

But Cancer has a way of sneaking up on you when least expected. Jake's Cancer returned and 6 day's after his 20th Birthday, Jake passed away. Among many things, Jake was a beloved grandson, son, brother, and friend. He is missed each and every day.

Although Jake did not have Cystic Fibrosis, I know how much his family appreciated the donations and support during Jake's journey and their time of need. Since this event’s inception in 2009, over one thousand firefighters worldwide have raised over $1.5 million in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. My hope is that by continuing to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, Jake's spirit may continue to bring joy to families in need and encouragement to all those continuing to fight Cancer.

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Proverbs 17:17
