Why I Climb: CF Climb Spotlight Series
The CF Climb Spotlight Series features individuals who inspire and bring hope to their local CF community and raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis – all while climbing to the tops of stadiums and buildings around the nation. We hope these stories give you insight into the determination and passion of these climbers, and that you consider participating in a climb. Together, we can reach new heights in the quest for a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Greetings from Oregon
Team Name: Portland Firefighter Stairclimb and ROSE UP
CF Event: CF Climb
Mike’s affiliation with the Foundation began 12 years ago when he joined hundreds of firefighters from around the country and world to participate in the Portland Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge, climbing the 42 flights of stairs of the US Bancorp Tower affectionately known as “Big Pink.” The stair climb has raised over $1.5 million since its inception, and Mike has been a large part of those fundraising efforts.
When he began climbing, he had no knowledge of or connection to CF. He participated in the event because it seemed like a great cause with a fun and challenging event. Through the years he has made many new friends, met people who are living with CF, pushed himself personally and physically, all while raising money for the Foundation and a cure for CF. Little did he know that CF would soon hit close to home and his CF story would come full circle.
Last summer, his newborn granddaughter, Mila, was diagnosed with CF, changing his connection to the Foundation forever. This year Mike had hoped to be more involved with the planning of the stair climb, as CF has now become a part of his life story in the most personal way, but with the event being cancelled, he was unable to do so. Then the opportunity for ROSE UP presented itself. Mike was selected as the local ambassador, in hopes that he could continue to engage not only firefighters he has climbed alongside for years, but others in the CF community and beyond.
Mike raised an incredible $2,549 (and growing) for ROSE UP this year by sharing his story and engaging those around him. He and his wife are also new Grampions in the Oregon chapter and look forward to being more involved with our chapter moving forward.
