My Team CF Story
Why support team CF?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition that causes thick mucus to stick in the lungs, leading to risk for infections and making it difficult just to breathe. CF is caused by differences in a gene called CFTR, which is responsible for making a channel that allows salt and water to move in and out of our cells. Our understanding of what causes this disease has led to tremendous improvements in treatment; for the first time there are now more adults with CF than children for this once fatal childhood disease. As a genetic counselor I have seen first hand the exciting research and breakthroughs made possible by the hard work, dedication and funding of the CF Foundation. But there is still much more work to be done to keep adding more tomorrows to the lives of all the moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends and co-workers with CF. We cannot stop until CF stands for “Cure Found”! My personal connection to CF is through my cousin’s 6-year-old daughter Sutton, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth.
Why run the Chicago Marathon?
For several years now, running has been a connection between my brother, sister and me. Living in different cities and states can make it difficult to keep in touch, and running has become an important connection for us. Having completed a few half-marathons together, we have been mulling over the idea of doing a full marathon for the past few years. We finally made the decision recently that it was time to commit to the idea and dedicate oursevles to it. The Chicago Marathon provided a perfect opportunity for each of us to not only achieve our personal running goals, but also come together as a family to do our own small part in supporting the CF Foundation and the research that will help Sutton and the other ~30,000 American’s with cystic fibrosis live their best and healthiest lives.
