My Team CF Story
The Three Day Stampede toward the Cure for Cystic Fibrosis is this weekend. You all know how it began and how incredibly special is it to me. The Stampede has required thousands of donors, sponsors, volunteers and customers in 28 years to have raised almost 2 MILLION DOLLARS . (We will be breaking the 2 Million Dollar mark at some point on Friday.) I have asked my friends, my colleagues, my family, perfect strangers and so many other people for things that you wouldn't imagine! Money, their time, their services, their friends and family and their time, money and services, and for the most part they oblige.
What started the event was the birth of a very special set of twins, (Kayla Bessette & Samantha Rae) in the late summer of 1989, just a few days before I left for college. They were my first nieces, I had them before I had Eric Sherwin, I had them before I had my own kids, I had them before I had my first car or even the knowledge of how much I was going to love them and want to be a part of their lives. Thank goodness I had an out of state roommate (Yvonne Goldschmidt Coad, bless you) in college who would let me drive her prized Subaru (Gwenaviere) to the hospital for visits and then home on weekends so they wouldn't forget my face. Now they are almost 29 and probably at times want to forget my face but alas, have not. They are two of the best people I know and they have been a constant in my life since I was 17 years old. I used to make them laugh but now they make me laugh! They are where this event started but this event has become so much bigger then that or anything else we could have imagined. This event belongs to everyone who participates and is beyond my wildest expectations.
I know how many times you are all asked to donate for a good cause. I love to support those too! This is the only cause I ASK folks to support. This is my cause. The first fundraiser I ever organized was a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis while I was in college. I will be participating in the 5k run for CF on Sunday of the event and have a very healthy competition with Jen McLane Perlee as to who can raise the most money online. If you would like to help fuel this competition and raise money for a cause that I will always hold near and dear to my heart you can donate now!
Thank you for listening! I think I am feeling nostalgic and sappy during this highly exciting and emotional week. Come see me at Stampede as I will be giving out free hugs, as per the usual somewhere between the Christmas tree stands and the balls of yarn. Love you all.
