It’s hard to believe this will be our 8th year participating in the Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis! In just that short period of time, there have been some amazing accomplishments:
Our team has raised over $100,000 for the CF Foundation!
The life expectancy for those with CF has increased from 37 to 47. That’s huge!
Treatments have improved significantly.
New drugs have been approved, including one that Ellie started taking about 18 months ago. Since starting this drug, her lung function has increased about 20% and her weight has increased to normal.
Another new drug that is about to be approved by the FDA has the potential to benefit more than 90% of people with CF.
For the first time ever, more than half of the population of people with CF are over 18.
These are remarkable achievements, and they couldn’t have been possible without donations from individuals like us.
Ellie is now 8 years old. She's playing basketball and softball and enjoying second grade. She likes to talk about having CF because she knows it makes her special. What she doesn’t know is that cystic fibrosis is a progressive disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.
The drug that Ellie is taking provides a genetic correction for the genes that cause her to have CF. It’s the first drug to address the underlying cause of CF. It's incredibly exciting and will definitely help keep her healthy for a long time, but it’s still not a cure.
That's where we come in, and hopefully you too. Every year, we walk in support of Ellie and everyone else with CF, including those that have lost the battle with CF. We walk in support of the CF Foundation, which funds and supports the development of those drugs and treatments. And we walk to give hope to tens of thousands of children and adults who live every day with this disease and to give them more tomorrows. We all want more tomorrows, don't we? You can help give Ellie, and thousands of people with CF more tomorrows by donating, walking, encouraging, and supporting Team G.
We hope you can join us in person or through a donation at any level!!
Important note on Attendance at Foundation Events:
Infections can exacerbate CF symptoms and worsen lung function, so we ask attendees at Foundation-sponsored events to observe the following best practices to reduce the risk of germ transmission:
Regularly wash hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel.
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow.
Maintain a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection.
To further reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation’s attendance policy recommends that all people with CF maintain a safe 6-foot distance from each other at all times while attending an outdoor Foundation-sponsored event. All Great Strides walks are non-smoking events.
