My Great Strides Story
On the outside he looks perfect, on the inside his body is in a fight for its life….every...single...day. He’s 12 years old; he’s a fighter; he’s our hero! This life-threatening disease has tested Austin’s body in so many ways in the short six years since his diagnosis; sinus surgeries, bronchoscopies, hospitalizations, shots, blood draws, x-rays, physical therapy, too many doctor’s appointments to count, over 2,200 hours of vest therapy, and approximately 250 pills per week.
But we won’t quit, we won’t give up; Cystic Fibrosis is a daily battle and we will fight that battle with everything we have! We try not to let our minds "wonder" to the darker part of this chronic disease - life expectancy… but in the same breath, it is an overwhelming feeling to see the steady "aging" of the CF population and to know that progress is being made to understand and treat Cystic Fibrosis. When Austin was born, the median age of survival was 33.4 years. Today the median predicted survival age is close to 40. This new number makes us hopeful. It’s a sign that over the last decade, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been hard at work investing our donations to add years to the lives of thousands of people hurt by this dreadful disease. But, of course, 40 isn’t good enough for us or anyone else that has Cystic Fibrosis. We won’t stop supporting the CF Foundation until CF stands for Cure Found, and the median life expectancy has doubled!
Our family cannot even begin to put into words how grateful we are to each and every one of you who has helped support Austin and our family. We would love for you to join us this year at the Great Strides Walk on Friday, April 28th at Pfeiffer Park in Cedar Falls. There will be free food and games starting at 5:30 p.m. with a one mile walk at 6:30 p.m.
