My Great Strides Story
HELLO! It is Great Strides time!
We are raising money to Find a Cure for OWEN! Our journey with CF started 14 years ago when Owen was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. While we were relieved to finally know what was wrong with him, we were shocked to learn about the life expectancy of CF was only about 28 years. Today over half the CF population is above 18 years old and the median life expectancy is 42 years now. However, we need a CURE NOT A LIFE EXPECTANCY. This will be our 14th year "walking." Chris will be at the walk, but both boys and Coach Mom have soccer games.
We are so proud of our Owen. It has been a tough year for him as he continues to battle pseudomonas cycling Cayston 28 days on and 28 days off. He was due to have sinus surgery in February, but a strange fever illness delayed that and caused him to get quite sick, so he ended up on two weeks of IV antibiotics in March and then had his sinus surgery. He has been doing amazing since then and his PFT is the highest (94) that it has been in over 2-1/2 years.
Owen has missed a lot of school again this year, but he is always able to catch up quickly. He is in HS Algebra 1, HS Physical Science, and Honors band. He continues to earn straight As. Owen is very active in Boy Scouts with his brother, Spencer. Owen is a Life Scout working toward his Eagle Scout rank. (Spencer also became a Life Scout recently.) Both boys are now also in the Order of Arrow, which is Boy Scouts national honor society. Owen is still playing soccer and loves to play goalie, which stresses Mom out as Mom is the coach for this Spring Season! He is looking forward to a summer of swimming and Boy Scout Camps. Both boys will be attending NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) in June, then a week of Camp with their cousin, CJ, and finally Chris will join them for 10 days at Boy Scout Jamboree.
Yes, Owen has CF, but it does not have him. We try to make his life as normal as possible.
Thank you for your consideration in supporting this important cause. No contribution is too small.
