My Great Strides Story
HELLO! It is Great Strides time!
We are rasing money to Find a Cure for OWEN! Our journey with CF started 13 years ago when Owen was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. While we were relieved to finally know what was wrong with him, we were shocked to learn about the life expectancy of CF was only about 28 years. Today over half the CF population is above 18 years old and the median life expectancy is 42 years now. However, we need a CURE NOT A LIFE EXPECTANCY. This will be our 13th year walking.
We are so proud of our Owen. It has been a tough year for him as he battled pseudomonas cycling Cayston 28 days on and 28 days off. We missed the walk last year, because Owen was in the hospital for IV antibiotics. Amazingly, it was almost 18 months between his sinus surgeries, but he had one in November with a follow up in December.
Owen has missed a lot of school this year, but he is able to catch up quickly. He is in Honors math and maintains straight As. Owen is very active in Boy Scouts with his brother, Spencer. Owen is a Star Scout on his way to Life Scout with his older brother following closely behind. Both boys are now also in the Order of Arrow, which is Boy Scouts national honor society. Owen is still playing soccer and loves to play goalie, which stresses Mom out! He also plays flag football and is looking forward to a summer of swimming.
Yes, Owen has CF, but it does not have him. We try to make his life as normal as possible.
