My Great Strides Story
From Mary - 15 I’m in the 9th grade. I love being home more, swimming with swim team, playing with my new dog and hanging out with my brothers and friends. I also like hiking, camping, playing the piano, board games, reading and quilting. My favorite places to be are the beach and SWAMP church camp!!!!
One thing some people don’t know about me is that I have a fatal disease called Cystic Fibrosis. CF makes it harder to do things because it causes there to be a lot of extra thick phlegm in my lungs. It makes it hard to breath and can damage my lungs permanently. It also prevents my enzymes from reaching my digestive system, so I have to take them in pill form to digest my food. Having CF also means I have a very weak immune system. It is easy for me to get sick, and when I do, it is hard to get better. CF also prevents me from doing a lot of fun stuff, like swimming in a lake or hot tub because I can get sick from a lot of bacterias that other people can’t. I have to do several breathing/vest treatments a day to keep myself healthy.
Watch my video above!
Cystic fibrosis is fatal, genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas leading to life-threatening lung infections and the inability to digest food. The cause of death is usually lung failure.
When Mary was very young, the life expectance for those with CF was about 18. However, due to research and advances from the CFF, many people live to their upper 30s! This is hard to accept and we will do everything we can to help her live a full, longer life.
The Great Strides walk is May 20th at Suwanee Town Center Park. Our family is going to participate virtually. Please donate to help find a cure!
