Our Great Strides Story
Kick off your shoes.
Walk on the beach.
CURE CYSTIC FIBROSIS!
The Woods family invites you to walk with us again in the Volusia County Great Strides walk for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on May 20, 2017 in Daytona Beach.
This will be the fourth year that we have organized a team to honor and support our son, Tobin, who was diagnosed with this disease when he was two weeks old. Help us meet our team goals of 200 walkers and $10,000 raised for the CF Foundation!
THIS YEAR'S WALK WILL BE ON THE BEACH AT 5 P.M.
So for those of you who find it hard to get up on a weekend morning and haul it out to the beach (like us!), this will be a snap! You won't want to miss out on this beautiful evening stroll!
In 2016, our team was recognized for the second year in a row as Top Team Fundraiser for the Volusia County Great Strides walk! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who supports us as we continue our journey to find a cure for CF. We are so grateful to our amazing friends and family who come together every year to help us get closer to the cure.
SINCE THE WALK:
This year, Tobin has continued to be healthy! To hear more about his health, please visit our personal page:
Our family also continued to be involved with the CF Foundation this year. Mike continues to be on the board of the Central Florida Chapter of the CF Foundation. In October, Mike and Missy were invited to attend several events at the 30th Annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Orlando, where more than 4,000 doctors, scientists and others invested in the CF cause gathered to share and learn information. In March, Mike participated on the March on the Hill event in Washington, D.C. for the CF Foundation, where advocates meet with legislators to tell personal stories and lobby for NIH funding.
Year after year, we continue to see advances in CF medicine. A game-changing drug named Orkambi was approved in 2015 by the FDA for use on CF patients ages 12 and up who have two copies of the F508del gene (like Tobin). This drug has greatly improved the lives of many with CF by improving lung function and significantly reducing the rate of pulmonary exacerbations, which can lead to frequent hospitalizations and accelerated lung disease. In September of 2016, Orkambi was approved for children ages 6-11. We can expect Tobin to be eligible for the second generation of Orkambi when he is six.
Your support of the CF Foundation is what makes these life-changing advancements possible! When you walk or donate, you are making a difference TODAY in the lives of those who live with CF. We are getting closer to a cure but we're not there yet. With your help, it can and WILL happen in Tobin's lifetime.
We need your help to keep pushing until a true cure is found - for Tobin and for all others with CF. Please consider walking with our family on May 20!
Even if you cannot walk with us, you can still be involved!
- Donating through Tobin's 200 walk team
- Walking or volunteering for the Great Strides walk closest to your home
- Joining our CF Cycle for Life team, Tobin's Two-Wheelers, for the ride through Central Florida on October 1, 2017.
Thank you so much for your support!
Missy, Mike, Ainsley and Tobin Woods
