Our Great Strides Story
This has been a very difficult year for both Maureen and Jack. Maureen was hospitalized for Pneumonia last July, this was after a two week course of IV antibiotice. She also needed to be put on Oxygen in order to breathe. This was a reality that we had not had to experience before. This was a true sign of the progression of her disease. No matter how many hours are spent on chest therapies , inhaled medications, oral medications, IV antibiotics, or exercising; CF is a progressive disease. Maureen was physically unable to work for over 6 months last year, this too was a new reality. She is now back working full time, but sick again and back on oral antibiotics hoping to avoid hospitalization and or IV antibiotics. There is no cure......
Jack too struggled greatly. He spent all of last year out of school and has not been able to return, as of yet, full time. The hope at this point is to get back in the beginning of April. Unfortunately, he is coughing again, on an antibiotic again and has a decrease in his lung function again. He ended 2015 with a sinus surgery on New Years Eve. Between November 2015 and January 2016 he spent 19 days in patient at CHONY. He is an amazingly strong young man. He sits at the kitchen table daily with a revolving door of tutors. He does the best he can to socialize, but its hard when you are feeling so crappy!
CF is a vicious disease that takes and takes and takes. Breathing becomes more and more difficult everyday. There are therapies available, but these will not help Maureen and Jack. Each day brings us closer to running out the clock. Yes, a double lung transplant could help them breathe easier, but that's a whole new can of worms to open. We need a CURE! Any organ transplant takes time. There are not enough organs for those who need them. Consider becoming an organ donor! Its so easy and think of how many lives you can save.
As a mother all I can do is support my children. I spend countless days in the hospital, hours at doctors appointments, and so many sleepless nights listening to them cough. I would do anything to take this fight from them. I need help!
