Our Great Strides Story
This is Lilla. She is nine years old and is living with cystic fibrosis. Although researchers have discovered therapies and drugs that have extended the lives of people with CF, the median age of survival for people with CF is only late thirties.
The daily battle to fight this disease is expensive, time consuming, and unrelenting. She spends two hours a day doing chest physiotherapy, pops more pills a day than a drug addict, and spends at least four weeks a year in the hospital. Fortunately, Lilla’s lung function has stabilized at 48% this past year -- but still far too low for a nine year old.
On average it takes $1-billion and ten years to bring a new drug to the market. In the last six years the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has directly funded the research, development, and FDA approval of four new drugs, two of which Lilla currently benefits from, and another we hope to try soon!
