My Great Strides Story
As some of you may know our amazing 5 year old son Eli has Cystic Fibrosis. Eli was diagnosed at birth after the newborn screening and has been fighting ever since.
On May 6th the Austin chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation will be hosting the Great Strides walk at the Austin Zoo. This will be our 3rd year participating in this amazing event. We are inviting everyone to come join us in this fight to change CF from Cystic Fibrosis to Cure Found.
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
We have been very lucky that Eli has maintained excellent health, and 2017 is looking like his best year yet. Eli has never cultured out any bacteria in his lungs and never needed to be hospitalized. Luck is only part of what goes into his success. We wouldn’t be in the position we are in without an amazing group of people at Dell Children’s CF clinic, and friends and family that support and help us whenever we need it and the research from the foundation.
Eli fights his CF in multiple ways. Everyday he does two breathing treatments which last up to an hour at a time. He inhales Albuterol, Hypertonic Saline, and Pulmozyme all while wearing his smart vest which helps with lung clearance. Whenever he eats he takes digestive enzymes. That means 20 pills a day. We also try to get Eli exercising as much as possible.
It may sound like Eli is doing well and raising money should be left to someone else, but now is no time to stop. We are all in this to find a cure for CF. Wonderful new treatments are on the horizon because of the CF foundation, so we have to keep going! We are asking for you to come walk with us and raise money to fund research, raise awareness and give those with CF a voice.
Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event at the Austin zoo that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families.
