On July 9th, 1998 our sweet 6 week old baby Kyra Athena Hoolihan was diagnosed with CYSTIC FIBROSIS... and we were told she may not see Kindergarten. Then, we were introduced to the CF FOUNDATION and found HOPE. A Spokesperson for the foundation since age 9, Kyra has participated in the CF's GREAT STRIDES WALKATHON since before age 2, surrounded by our amazing circle of family, friends, and supporters...Now 20 (!!!!), with a lifetime of meds and doctors and therapies that we are grateful to the foundation for, she has always been an exceptional person and student - winner of a National Merit Scholarship, as well as many others... is part of STANFORD UNIVERSITY's Class of 2020 majoring in archaeology, and sings acapella in an all women group named Counterpoint.
There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis, 70,000 worldwide. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends and co-workers who struggle every day just to breathe. We walk for them. Will you join us? All we need you to do to become a member of our team is click on the "Join our Team" button. From there you can make a donation and start your fundraising... Our 2019 event is IN SIMI VALLEY on SATURDAY MAY 4th and will be TEAM KYRA’s 20th GREAT STRIDES!!!
By becoming a member of our team and asking your circle to make a donation to sponsor you in any amount, you are joining a growing group of people committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Together, we are adding tomorrows to the lives of people living with CF by supporting the search for a cure.
Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families. Our team has hosted GREAT STRIDES in Kyra's home town of Simi Valley since 2010 ~ Now as VENTURA COUNTY GREAT STRIDES we are proud to welcome all our surrounding cities' CF Families and Supporters.
Important note on Attendance at Foundation Events:
Infections can exacerbate CF symptoms and worsen lung function, so we ask attendees at Foundation-sponsored events to observe the following best practices to reduce the risk of germ transmission:
Regularly wash hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel.
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow.
Maintain a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection.
To further reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation’s attendance policy recommends that all people with CF maintain a safe 6-foot distance from each other at all times while attending an outdoor Foundation-sponsored event. All Great Strides walks are non-smoking events.
