This year my sister and I are representing my cousin Caitlin on the West Coast as her team surrounds her at the East Coast CF walk. Caitlin received a double lung transplant due to CF and she walks every year with the hope others will not need to go down that path. Caitlin has been a constant voice and inspiration for those who can overcome the biggest challenges life throws at them. She has created many witty and eye-opening post so I borrowed one here to share with you all...
"Everybody likes a social media challenge, right!?!? If you want to try one that's for a good cause, and will definitely not kill you, read on...
Some people say that breathing with CF lungs is like breathing through a straw. I guess in some ways it is. But that's not really how I remember it. As my lungs got worse, it felt more and more like my breaths were what I'm going call, "stuck in the middle". I always felt like I couldn't get enough air in, but also that I couldn't get enough air OUT.
So here's the middle breath challenge:
1) let all of the air out of your lungs, then very slowly breathe in for about *8 seconds*
2) go back to normal breath
3) at the same pace, breathe IN for *5 seconds*
4) slowly breathe OUT and IN for *3 seconds* at a time
5) breathe within that middle window for as long as you can
How long could you do it?
That's what it was like breathing with my old lungs: stuck in the middle of where my breathing should have been. As time went on, that breath window got smaller and smaller. The last thing I did before I went into surgery was take slowest, deepest breath I could. It lasted less than 2 seconds.
By supporting Great Strides, we are not only adding tomorrows for people with CF, but we are adding quality to those tomorrows by keeping that breath window wide open!
