Our Cycle for Life Story
Our daughter Penelope was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was one day old. This chronic disease causes her to lead a double life. At school, at parks, and at friends' houses, she is just like any other five-year-old: energetic, happy, curious, loud, and full of life. But at home, she spends much of her time fighting to slow the damage that CF is doing to her body. She spends about two hours per day doing respiratory treatments, she has to take enzyme pills to help digest her food, and she has to work hard to eat enough to keep her weight at a healthy level. And she's in for the long haul with this fight - CF isn't a childhood disease that she will grow out of, but rather something she's going to have to deal with for the rest of her life.
Unless! Unless we can find a cure for CF. And let me tell you folks, we are close. New medicines and treatments released just in the past few years have had a remarkable effect on some CF patients. And even more promising research is already in the works. We have every reason to believe that by the time she is an adult, Penelope will see Cystic Fibrosis as a minor inconvenience instead of a looming threat.
And that's where we need your help. Please join is in supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Cycle for Life, on Saturday June 15 in Sonoma County, California. There are many ways you can join in:
- Make a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at http://fightcf.cff.org/goto/gopenelope or by using the "Donate to a Team Member" button above. The CFF is a groundbreaking organization in the way they allocate funds towards achieving their goal of finding a cure. We are so lucky to have them fighting on our side.
- Sign up to ride with us at here at this page. This is a laid-back 25 mile ride, and riders of all levels are welcome. You can help us multiply our impact by expanding our fundraising network to people you know that we don't. And there are a lot worse ways to spend your Saturday morning than going on a bike ride in Sonoma County while helping save lives at the same time.
- If you are interested in fundraising but aren't in the Bay Area or don't feel up for the ride, there is a "virtual" rider option that will put you on our team but not require any actual bike riding. I say it counts as exercise either way! Sign up at either one of the links above.
- If you're not the kind of person who likes signing up for stuff, just forward this email or the donation links along to anybody you know who might like to help. Put it on social media!
Thank you so much for your love and support. We couldn't get through this without such an amazing group of people helping us out.
